What are Dental Crowns?

Restoring and Protecting Your Smile: The Benefits and Uses of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, often referred to as "caps," are custom-made restorations designed to protect and strengthen teeth that are damaged, decayed, or structurally compromised. They are typically recommended when a tooth is too weak to support a traditional filling, offering a reliable solution to restore its shape, strength, and functionality.

Crafted from durable materials like porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, dental crowns are made to blend naturally with your existing teeth—ensuring both a strong bite and an attractive, seamless smile.

Types of Crowns

Porcelain

Our aesthetic crowns are metal-free and seamlessly blend in with your natural teeth.

Gold

These crowns are crafted from a durable gold alloy that can withstand strong biting and chewing forces, making them perfect for use on back teeth.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

A ceramic crown with a metal base for added strength.

The Dental Crown Process

At Dennis Dental Care, we customize the dental crown process to fit your individual needs. Here is a detailed breakdown of what you can anticipate:
1

Examination and Consultation

During your first appointment, Dr. Rob will carefully examine your tooth and smile. After assessing the damaged tooth, he will decide if a dental crown is the most appropriate treatment or if another option would be better. If a crown is advised,  Dr. Rob will provide a detailed explanation of the procedure and address any questions or concerns you may have.
2

Tooth Preparation

When you choose to move forward with getting your dental crown, the affected tooth will be prepared by removing a small portion of its outer structure to make room for the crown to fit over the entire tooth. Numbing medication will be administered to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
3

Impression

Following that, a precise digital scan or "virtual impression" of your prepared tooth will be captured. This 3D image will then be transmitted to our dental laboratory, where skilled technicians will utilize the digital data to create your personalized crown. This process guarantees a flawless fit and natural look based on the specifications provided by Dr. Rob.
4

Temporary Crown Placement

During the process of creating your permanent crown, a temporary crown will be placed on your prepared tooth to prevent sensitivity or damage until your permanent crown is ready.
5

Final Crown Placement

Once your custom crown is prepared, you will come back to our office for its placement. Our dentist will ensure the crown fits correctly, make any needed adjustments, and then securely attach the crown to your tooth.
