Post-Cosmetic Dental Reconstruction Care
It’s normal to experience some discomfort or bite-related issues after cosmetic dental reconstruction. Your brain may need time to adapt to changes in the alignment or thickness of your teeth. If you notice high spots or persistent bite problems, please contact our office at (330) 628-0066 to schedule an adjustment appointment.
Sensitivity to hot and cold is also common as your teeth recover from structural modifications. This typically improves over time. Additionally, your gums may feel sore for a few days. To ease discomfort and reduce swelling, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) three times daily. Over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Ibuprofen every 3–4 hours can also help.
Adjusting to Your New Dental Work
In the initial days, you may notice increased saliva or slight changes in speech. These effects are temporary and usually resolve quickly. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily to ensure the longevity of your dental work. Routine cleanings and plaque removal are essential to preserving your new smile.
Avoid hard or sticky foods that can damage both natural and reconstructed teeth. Items such as ice, peanut brittle, fingernails, and sticky candies should be avoided. Beverages and foods like coffee, tea, red wine, and berries can stain cosmetic dental materials. Smoking can also discolor your new smile.
If you play sports, let us know—we can provide a custom mouthguard. For nighttime teeth grinding, be sure to use the night guard provided. As you adjust to your new smile, remember we're here for you. If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Care Instructions for Dental Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges typically require two to three visits. During your first appointment, the affected teeth are prepared, and molds are taken. Temporary crowns or bridges are then placed to protect your teeth while the permanent restorations are being crafted.
Following the procedure, numbness in your tongue, lips, and mouth roof is common due to anesthesia. Avoid hot foods and beverages until sensation fully returns.
If your temporary crown comes off, call us at (330) 628-0066 and bring it with you to be re-cemented. Keeping it in place is crucial to prevent tooth shifting and to ensure a proper final fit.
To care for the temporary crown:
- Avoid sticky and hard foods.
- Chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
- Continue brushing normally, but floss with caution to avoid dislodging the temporary piece.
Post-Tooth Extraction Instructions
Once the clot forms, it’s important not to disturb it. For the first 72 hours, avoid:
- Rinsing vigorously
- Using straws
- Smoking or drinking alcohol
- Brushing near the extraction site
Also, avoid strenuous physical activity for the first 24 hours to reduce bleeding risk.
Swelling and pain are common. Apply an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas) to the area to reduce swelling. Take any prescribed pain medication as directed, and complete the full course of antibiotics if prescribed—even if you start to feel better.
Stay hydrated and eat soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. Resume your regular diet as you feel comfortable. After 24 hours, return to your normal oral hygiene routine, brushing and flossing daily to aid healing.
Most people recover within a few days. If you experience heavy bleeding, intense pain, prolonged swelling, or a medication reaction, contact us at (330) 628-0066 immediately.
Post-Operative Instructions for Dental Fillings
After receiving a dental filling, please follow the care instructions provided by Dr. Rob to ensure a smooth recovery.
While numbness persists (usually for a few hours), avoid hot beverages or alcohol and be cautious not to bite your tongue or cheek accidentally.
To manage pain, take Ibuprofen or another recommended pain reliever for up to five days. Some sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal after a filling. However, if it continues beyond a week, your bite may need to be adjusted.
If sensitivity or discomfort lasts more than five days, please call our office for a re-evaluation.
