Safeguard Teeth with Dental Sealants
At times, brushing alone may not thoroughly clean every part of your child's mouth, particularly the difficult-to-reach areas where plaque can accumulate and lead to decay. Dental sealants offer additional protection by filling in tiny cracks and grooves with a protective resin. Once the sealant sets, it forms a smooth surface on the tooth, decreasing the likelihood of plaque buildup and enhancing the efficiency of brushing to prevent cavities.
Sealants are commonly applied to children's permanent teeth to prevent tooth decay once they have erupted. While sealing permanent teeth is more common than baby teeth, the decision to use sealants can vary for each child, so a dentist will recommend them based on individual needs.
Sealants usually last between three to five years, but it is possible for adults to still have sealants from childhood. Since sealants only protect teeth when they are intact, it is crucial to inform the dentist and schedule an appointment if a sealant comes off so that your child's teeth can be re-sealed.
