Safeguard Teeth with Dental Sealants
Sometimes, brushing alone may not effectively clean all areas of your child's mouth, especially the hard-to-reach spots where plaque can build up and cause decay. Dental sealants provide extra protection by filling in small cracks and grooves with a protective resin. Once the sealant hardens, it creates a smooth surface on the tooth, reducing the risk of plaque buildup and improving the effectiveness of brushing to prevent cavities.
Sealants are often applied to children's permanent teeth to prevent tooth decay once they have come in. While it is more common to seal permanent teeth rather than baby teeth, the decision to use sealants can vary for each child, so a dentist will recommend them based on their individual needs.
Sealants typically last between three to five years, but it is not uncommon for adults to still have sealants from their childhood. Since sealants only protect teeth when they are intact, it is important to inform the dentist and schedule an appointment if a sealant comes off so that your child's teeth can be re-sealed.
