What to know about dental sealants
Our dental sealants are a thin, protective coating made from plastic or other dental materials that easily stick to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. While commonly used for children, this treatment is suitable for patients of all ages. You can have sealants applied during your routine dental cleaning and exam. - Dental sealants can reduce the risk of cavities by 80% in the first 2 years and 50% for up to 4 years.
- Sealants can remain in the mouth for up to 9 years and can be replaced easily with proper care.
- Children without sealants are three times more likely to get cavities compared to those with sealants.
- Applying sealants is quick, painless, and simple, as the liquid is painted onto the teeth and hardens in about one minute.
Who can get dental sealants?
- School-age children
- Adults who are cavity-prone
- Anyone who wants an added layer of protection against decay!
What to Expect During Your Dental Sealant Treatment
A sealant is like a tiny plastic filling, but usually doesn't need numbing because tooth enamel doesn't have nerves.
- Initial Examination: We’ll begin by examining the tooth or teeth to be sealed. If there is any decay, it will be removed before applying the sealant.
- Surface Preparation: We’ll apply a solution to help the sealant bond effectively to the tooth surface.
- Sealant Application: The sealant will be painted onto the tooth, and a special curing light may be used to set it.
- Completion: The procedure is quick and simple, allowing you to resume your activities immediately.
