What are Dental Crowns?
Enhancing Your Smile: Exploring the Benefits and Purposes of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns, also known as caps, are custom-made coverings designed to protect and restore teeth that have been compromised by damage or decay. They are used when a tooth is too fragile to support a smaller filling, providing a durable solution to maintain its shape, strength, and functionality.
Crafted from durable materials like porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, dental crowns are tailored to blend seamlessly with your existing teeth, ensuring a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing smile.
Types of Crowns
Porcelain
Our metal-free aesthetic crowns seamlessly blend in with your natural teeth.
Gold
These crowns are made from a strong gold alloy that can endure powerful biting and chewing forces, making them ideal for use on molars.
Porcelain Fused to Metal
A metal-based ceramic crown for increased durability.
The Dental Crown Process
At Dennis Dental Care, we tailor the dental crown process to suit your specific needs. Below is a comprehensive breakdown of what you can expect:
1
Examination and Consultation
At your initial appointment, Dr. Rob will thoroughly inspect your tooth and smile. After evaluating the condition of the tooth, he will determine if a dental crown is the best course of action or if there is a more suitable alternative. If a crown is recommended, Dr. Rob will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.
2
Tooth Preparation
Once you decide to proceed with getting your dental crown, the affected tooth will be prepared by removing a small portion of its outer structure to accommodate the crown. Numbing medication will be given to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
3
Impression
Afterwards, a detailed digital scan or "virtual impression" of your prepared tooth will be taken. This 3D image will be sent to our dental laboratory, where experienced technicians will use the digital information to craft your custom crown. This method ensures a perfect fit and natural appearance tailored to the requirements outlined by Dr. Rob.
4
Temporary Crown Placement
While your permanent crown is being created, a temporary crown will be placed on your prepared tooth to protect it from sensitivity or damage until the permanent crown is ready.
5
Final Crown Placement
After your custom crown is ready, please return to our office for its placement. Our dentist will ensure the crown fits properly, make any necessary adjustments, and securely attach it to your tooth.
