Safeguard Teeth with Dental Sealants
Sometimes brushing alone may not be sufficient, particularly for the difficult-to-reach areas in your child's mouth. Toothbrushes may have difficulty cleaning the small cracks and grooves on teeth where plaque can accumulate and cause decay if left untreated. Dental sealants provide an extra layer of protection by filling in these tiny grooves with a protective plastic resin. Once the sealant hardens, it creates a smooth surface on the tooth, reducing the likelihood of plaque buildup. This enhances the effectiveness of brushing and helps prevent cavities.
Sealants are often applied to children's permanent teeth as a preventive measure against tooth decay once they have erupted. While it is more common to seal permanent teeth rather than baby teeth, the decision to use sealants can vary for each individual child, so a dentist will recommend them based on their specific needs.
Typically, sealants last between three to five years, but it is not uncommon for adults to still have sealants from their childhood. Since sealants only provide protection when they are intact, it is important to notify the dentist and schedule an appointment if a sealant comes off so that your child's teeth can be re-sealed.
