Post-Cosmetic Dental Reconstruction Care
If you are experiencing any discomfort or issues with your new bite after cosmetic dental reconstruction, it is completely normal. It may take some time for your brain to adjust to the changes in alignment or thickness of your teeth. If you notice any high spots or ongoing problems with your bite, please contact our office at Akron Phone Number (330) 628-0066 to schedule an adjustment appointment.
It is also common to experience sensitivity to hot and cold as your teeth heal after the removal of tooth structure. This sensitivity should improve over time. Your gums may also be sore for a few days. To help alleviate pain and swelling, rinse with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) three times a day. Taking a mild pain reliever, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin), every 3-4 hours can also help manage any discomfort.
Adjusting to Your New Dental Work
Don't worry if you experience changes in your speech or increased salivation in the first few days after getting your new dental work. These adjustments are normal and you will soon be speaking and feeling like yourself again. It is important to continue brushing and flossing daily to maintain the longevity of your new teeth. Regular plaque removal and cleaning appointments are essential for the ongoing success of your dental work.
To protect your new teeth, be cautious with hard foods that can damage natural teeth as well as your new dental work. Avoid items like beer nuts, peanut brittle, ice, fingernails, pencils, and sticky candies. Smoking can also stain your new teeth, so it is best to minimize or avoid stain-causing foods and drinks such as coffee, red wine, tea, and berries.
If you are active in sports, let us know so we can provide you with a custom mouthguard. If you grind your teeth at night, make sure to use the night guard we have given you. Adjusting to the appearance and feel of your new smile may take some time. If you have any concerns or issues, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here to help and answer any questions you may have.
Care Instructions for Dental Crowns and Bridges
Dental crowns and bridges usually require two to three appointments for completion. During the initial visit, your teeth will be prepared and molds of your mouth will be taken. Temporary crowns or bridges will be placed to protect your teeth while the custom restoration is being made. Due to the use of anesthesia, you may experience numbness in your tongue, lips, and the roof of your mouth. It is recommended to avoid eating and drinking hot beverages until the numbness completely wears off.
If a temporary crown comes off, please contact us at [phone number] and bring the temporary crown with you so we can re-cement it. Keeping the temporary crown in place is important to prevent other teeth from shifting and ensure a proper fit for your final restoration.
To care for the temporary crown, avoid sticky foods and hard substances, and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Continue to brush your teeth as usual, but floss carefully to avoid dislodging the temporary crown. If you experience temperature or pressure sensitivity after each appointment, it should diminish within a few weeks after the final restoration is placed. Mild pain medications, as prescribed by our office, can help manage any discomfort.

Post-Tooth Extraction Care Instructions
Following a tooth extraction, it is important to form a blood clot to stop bleeding and begin the healing process. To help with this, bite down on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes right after the procedure. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze pad and bite down firmly for another 30 minutes. This may need to be repeated several times.
Once the blood clot has formed, it is crucial not to disturb it to ensure proper healing. For the next 72 hours, avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously, using straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing the teeth near the extraction site. These actions can dislodge or dissolve the clot, hindering the healing process. Additionally, limit strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours to prevent increased blood pressure, which could cause more bleeding.
You may experience some pain and swelling after the extraction. Applying an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas or corn to the area can help reduce swelling. Follow your prescribed pain medication regimen, and if it is not effective, contact our office at (330) 628-0066. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue taking them for the full course, even if symptoms improve.
On the day of the extraction, focus on staying hydrated and eating soft, nutritious foods. Resume your normal eating habits once you are comfortable. After 24 hours, return to your regular dental routine, including brushing and flossing at least once a day, to speed up healing and maintain oral hygiene.
You should start feeling better and be able to return to normal activities within a few days. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, persistent swelling for 2-3 days, or have a reaction to the medication, contact our office immediately at (330) 628-0066.
Post-Op Instructions for Fillings
After receiving a dental filling, it is important to follow the instructions provided by Dr. Rob. These guidelines will help you get the most out of your treatment. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment with our dentist in Akron, OH, please call us at (330) 628-0066.
While you are still numb, it is crucial to be cautious. Avoid consuming alcohol or hot beverages until the numbness wears off, which may take several hours. During this time, you may not have normal pressure or temperature sensation, increasing the risk of accidentally burning your mouth or biting the inside of your cheek.
For pain management, take Ibuprofen or another recommended pain reliever for five days. It is common to experience post-operative sensitivity after getting a filling. If the sensitivity persists for more than a week, we may need to check your bite as the filling may be slightly too high, causing ongoing discomfort.
If sensitivity continues beyond five days, please contact us for a re-evaluation. If you have any other questions about post-operative care for dental fillings, do not hesitate to reach out to Dennis Dental Care. Our team members will be happy to assist you.
