What are Dental Crowns?

Enhancing and Protecting Your Smile: The Benefits and Applications of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are custom-made coverings that protect and restore damaged or decayed teeth. They are used when a tooth is too compromised to support a smaller filling, providing a robust solution to maintain its shape, strength, and functionality.

Crafted from durable materials like porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, dental crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, ensuring a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing smile.

Types of Crowns

Porcelain

Aesthetic crowns that are free of visible metals and are closely matched to your surrounding teeth.

Gold

Made from a gold alloy, these crowns withstand heavy biting and chewing pressure, making them ideal for back teeth.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

A type of ceramic crown with a reinforced metal base underneath

The Dental Crown Process

At Dennis Dental Care, the dental crown process is carefully tailored to meet your unique needs. Here's a step-by-step overview of what you can expect:
1

Examination and Consultation

During your initial visit, Dr. Rob will conduct a thorough examination of your tooth and overall smile. He will evaluate the damaged tooth and determine if a dental crown is the best treatment option or if another solution might be more suitable. If a crown is recommended, Dr. Rob will explain the procedure in detail and address any questions or concerns you may have.
2

Tooth Preparation

Once you decide to proceed with getting your dental crown, the affected tooth will need to be prepared. This involves removing a small portion of the tooth’s outer structure to create space for the crown to fit over the entire tooth. Numbing medication will be used to ensure your comfort throughout the process.
3

Impression

Next, a highly accurate digital scan or "virtual impression" of your prepared tooth will be taken. This 3D image will be sent to our dental laboratory, where technicians will use the digital information to fabricate your custom crown, ensuring a perfect fit and natural appearance according to Dr. Rob specifications.
4

Temporary Crown Placement

While your permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown will be placed over your prepared tooth. This temporary restoration will protect the tooth from sensitivity or damage while you wait for your permanent crown.
5

Final Crown Placement

Once your custom crown is ready, you will return to our office for its placement. Dr. Rob will ensure the crown fits perfectly, make any necessary adjustments, and then permanently bond the crown to your tooth.
