Safeguard Teeth with Dental Sealants
Brushing alone sometimes isn’t enough, especially for those hard-to-reach areas in your child’s mouth. A toothbrush can struggle to clean between the small cracks and grooves on teeth, where plaque can build up and lead to decay if not addressed. Dental sealants offer an additional layer of protection by filling these tiny grooves with a protective plastic resin. Once the sealant hardens, it smooths out the tooth’s surface, making it less likely for plaque to accumulate. This helps ensure that brushing is more effective and helps prevent cavities.
Sealants are usually applied to children’s permanent teeth once they have erupted as a preventive measure against tooth decay. While it’s more common to seal permanent teeth rather than baby teeth, the need for sealants can vary by individual, so a dentist will recommend them based on each child’s specific needs.
Sealants typically last between three to five years, but it’s not uncommon for adults to still have sealants from their childhood. Since sealants only offer protection when they are intact, it’s important to inform the dentist and schedule an appointment if a sealant comes off so that your child’s teeth can be re-sealed.
