What to know about dental sealants

Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating made from plastic or other dental materials, designed to easily adhere to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. While suitable for patients of all ages, this treatment is particularly common for children. It can be conveniently applied during your routine dental cleaning and exam. • Helps You Avoid Cavities: Dental sealants can effectively reduce the risk of cavities by 80% for the first 2 years, and by 50% for up to 4 years.
  • Long-lasting Protection: Sealants can last in the mouth for up to 9 years and can be easily replaced with proper care.
  • Especially Great for Children: Children without sealants are three times more likely to develop cavities compared to those who have sealants.
  • Fast, Painless, Easy Application: The liquid form of the thin coating is applied by painting it onto the teeth, and it solidifies in about one minute. It's that simple!

Who can get dental sealants?

What to Expect During Your Dental Sealant Treatment

A sealant can be thought of as a small plastic filling, but numbing isn’t usually necessary because tooth enamel lacks nerves.
  • Initial Examination: We’ll begin by examining the tooth or teeth to be sealed. If there is any decay, it will be removed before applying the sealant.
  • Surface Preparation: We’ll apply a solution to help the sealant bond effectively to the tooth surface.
  • Sealant Application: The sealant will be painted onto the tooth, and a special curing light may be used to set it.
  • Completion: The procedure is quick and simple, allowing you to resume your activities immediately.
